It
is sad fact that some children do not receive enough physical
affection from their parents. In adolescent depression, this fact
is extremely significant. Often the parents of children experiencing
adolescent depression have themselves a fear of personal relationships.
They show little direct affection, no caresses or kisses, only
an outer show of formal kindness.
The display of affection by parents for their children is as essential
to their well-being as good food and clean air. In today's difficult
world it is imperative that we establish a legacy of love for
our children to inherit.
IS IT IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS TO HUG THEIR KIDS?
General practioner, father of 3: Hugging is very important. Children
who do not receive any physical affection from their parents are
mentally deprived. These children are often more aggressive and
hostile.
14 year old girl: A hug from Mum or Dad tells me they love me
and care for me.
Family Life Co -coordinator: Hugs tell us that we are loveable
and capable of loving. We need that kind of self-worth and belief
in ourselves to face the the challenges of living.
Grandmother of 18: A reassuring hug after a scolding tells the
child that it was the action which you disliked , not the person.
Psychologist: The sense of touch represents security to a child.
A hug is an accurate channel of information to the child, their
primary way of knowing they are loved. Loving, physical contact
with children is critical to their survival. It is documented
that deprived of this, children can become emotionally ill.
6 year old : Hugs are better 'n chocolate chip cookies.
